October postcard club

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

'Autumn leaves' Nat King Cole

It's that time of year again, the leaves have turned and started to fall, halloween is around the corner and there's Christmas stuff in the supermarket.

Outside our house in South East London is a beautiful cherry tree, its pale pink blossoms cover the car in the early spring heralding the changing season. In the autumn its leaves turn gold and maroon, fall to the pavement and confirm that  autumn is here and that winter will be with us soon.

For Octobers postcard club I have printed a four colour CMYK screen print of the fallen leaves. A photographic image can be split into Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (or black) layers and converted halftone dots and when printed in order our eyes see the print as a full colour image. It's how colour images are printed in newspapers.

For this image I've enlarged the halftone dots so you can really see the process, if you stand back from the image you can't see the dots, your eye sees the photographic image, as you get closer to it you see the dots and the patterns they make together. I like the idea of lifting the lid on the process, you can make the dots a lot tighter and even close up you struggle to see them.

The print with two colours, cyan and yellow printed.

Sign up to postcard club to get a beautiful print through the post every month.
